I’m new here!

New to St. Mark’s or considering checking us out?  Want to learn more?  Here are some answers to questions that may help you find what you’re looking for.

What can I expect at a worship service?

We typically begin by singing a hymn, listening to readings from the Bible, and then a central message.  We take the time to greet each other during the service (“pass the peace”), we pray for our community and for the world, and then we have communion (bread and wine) together.  All are welcome to partake in communion.  The order of the service is printed in the bulletin and is easy to follow along.  Then if you’re interested you can stick around after the service for coffee, tea, goodies and good conversation at our coffee hour.

How long are the services?

Our services range from an hour to an hour and 15 minutes.

Can I bring my kids to church?

We love having kids of all ages at St. Mark’s.  Loud or quiet, they’re welcome in worship and BLAST and any other activity within the life of our church.  We have a fully equipped nursery and activity bags available for kids to use during the services.

What programs are available for young families and kids?

Check out our Kids & Youth page for information on our programs.  We also have a nursery where you can listen to the service and chat with other young families.

What’s the dress code?

Wear what makes you feel comfortable.  You can wear a suit and tie, formal attire, or casual clothing like jeans and a T-shirt.

I’m not familiar with church or Lutheran liturgy … is there someone who can answer any questions I have or help me follow the service?

YES!  If you have any questions at all, Pastor Annette would be happy to help – whether that means a friendly conversation or connecting you with someone who can help guide you through the church service.  Everyone has their own story.  Some people have always gone to church, some have never been.  Regardless, we’re really glad you want to learn a bit more about St. Mark’s.

Do I have to be Christian to attend?

Absolutely not.  Whether you’re of a different religious tradition or none at all, or just beginning to learn about the Christian faith – you’re welcome here.   God made you, so come exactly as you are.  We’re a diverse group at St. Mark’s, and we believe that everyone has something to offer.

Furthermore, St. Mark’s welcomes all people to full participation in the life of this community regardless of gender, race, ancestry, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, age, record of offences, marital status, sexual orientation, economic status, family status, or disability.  All are welcome!

How can I learn more about Christianity?

You can attend our “The Way Home” course to learn more and openly discuss your questions in a relaxed setting.  Visit our Adult Learning page to read about this course.  Pastor Annette would also be happy to meet with you to explore your questions.
